Choosing Upholstery Fabrics for High-Traffic Commercial Seating

Guides

Fabric is often the first part of a sofa or chair to show wear. For commercial projects, choosing the right upholstery can double the service life of your seating and keep maintenance costs under control.

Key specifications to check

  • Abrasion resistance: 30,000 Martindale rubs for light use, 50,000 or more for lobbies and restaurants
  • Fire performance: match local rules such as BS 5852 in the UK or CAL 117 in the US
  • Cleanability: solution-dyed or coated fabrics that resist stains and fading
  • Pilling grade of 4 or above after testing

Color also affects durability. Mid-tone and textured fabrics hide marks better than pale plain weaves, which is why many of our restaurant clients choose melange or bouclé finishes.

Oakline keeps more than 300 tested fabric options in our Foshan showroom. Request a swatch set with your sample order and we will include test reports for each fabric.
